Psalm 19 is BEAUTIFUL.
I think you will agree. Every day when I look at the sky (the puffy clouds or sun peeping through clouds or the sunset or stars and moon) I think of how AWESOME God is! And then verse 4 of this psalm says:
“Yet their message has gone throughout the earth, and their words to all the world.”
This is probably a big part of why so many know some aspects of God, because his works and love and creativity are so obvious in creation! But then, God asks us to finish painting the story by sharing the rest − the Gospel; to put words with the illustration; to now be in awe of the gift AND accept it.
It is so easy to get caught up in LIFE. We have jobs, families, friends, massive “to-do” lists, headaches, stress, good things, bad things, and “fill-in-the-blank.” It is FULL of distractions, and I think this is the opposite of what God desires for us, his beloved children. In some way, shape, or form, He is constantly drawing us to Himself; sadly, many times we will hear, see, and experience wonderful things and not even acknowledge the One from whom all good gifts come (James 1:17).
Recently I, too, have fallen prey to the busyness. As I prepare to go overseas as a missionary, there are SO many preparations, stresses, and such. Yet last night on my way to spend some time with family I saw the gorgeous sky stretched out before me and thought (as I often think of such views), “the heavens declare His handiwork!” Later when I got home, I read some from a book, which referenced Psalm 19, which starts with:
“The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship.”
WOW. I believe God wanted to catch my attention with this, to remind me of who He is and what my focus should never stray from; to realize not only the beauty He has made/makes but also to know Him Himself. It is this God I desire to share with the world. 1 Peter 2:24 says:
“He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. By His wounds you are healed.”
He has already paid the price, the consequences, for our sins. All we have to do is turn to Him, repent, and accept the gift! And He will do the work in us; His spirit transforms our minds and lives (Romans 12:1-2). So it is my prayer and encouragement that the next time you look into the sky, or across a river, are scaling a mountain peak, or even dealing with a complicated customer, remember the Lord, that He is good, and has a plan for each of us. And for those of us who call ourselves “Christ followers,” we need to be the light in the darkness (2 Corinthians 4). He will make us all new.
1 The heavens proclaim the glory of God.
The skies display his craftsmanship.
2 Day after day they continue to speak;
night after night they make him known.
3 They speak without a sound or word;
their voice is never heard.
4 Yet their message has gone throughout the earth,
and their words to all the world.
God has made a home in the heavens for the sun.
5 It bursts forth like a radiant bridegroom after his wedding.
It rejoices like a great athlete eager to run the race.
6 The sun rises at one end of the heavens
and follows its course to the other end.
Nothing can hide from its heat.
7 The instructions of the Lord are perfect,
reviving the soul.
The decrees of the Lord are trustworthy,
making wise the simple.
8 The commandments of the Lord are right,
bringing joy to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are clear,
giving insight for living.
9 Reverence for the Lord is pure,
The laws of the Lord are true;
each one is fair.
10 They are more desirable than gold,
even the finest gold.
They are sweeter than honey,
even honey dripping from the comb.
11 They are a warning to your servant,
a great reward for those who obey them.
12 How can I know all the sins lurking in my heart?
Cleanse me from these hidden faults.
13 Keep your servant from deliberate sins!
Don’t let them control me.
Then I will be free of guilt
and innocent of great sin.
14 May the words of my mouth
and the meditation of my heart
be pleasing to you,
O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.
