I dream of a day in the not so distant future. The sun is shining. The grass has just been cut. Cumbre Alta has a field of its own. Not just a field, but a stadium. Seats 20,000 people. The stadium is full.

We’ve made our way through the 5 levels of Ecuadorian soccer and we are poised to play in the home leg of the big final to be crowned champions of Ecuador. Along the way we’ve made huge mistakes, but some really smart decisions as well. We’ve maintained our focus. We have reached the highest heights of Ecuadorian soccer and we’ve shared Christ well.

Our club brand is well established. We play a certain way and everybody knows us for this style. We’ve been able to develop players who not only are gifted soccer players but who have a passion for Christ. Our players are wanted all over the world because of their technical abilities.

The stadium is full of sounds like any stadium is when a big game is about to be played. Spectators are nervous. Players have gone through their warm ups. Decisions on starting lineups have been made. The game is about to start.

As the players walk out onto the field and the game is about to start, 20,000 Cumbre Alta fans start their singing. They always sing through the games, as do so many fans all over South America and the world. But as in many ways, Cumbre Alta is different in this respect to most clubs in the world, maybe all clubs in the world. Cumbre Alta’s fan’s songs are not full of abuse toward the opponent or heralding the great achievements of their team. Our fans start singing hymns and praises, old and new, worshiping God. Just like they do every week. Like most fans in the world they come to worship, just they aren’t worshiping a team, or a player, or a coach….no, they come every weekend to worship God with their fellow Cumbre Alta fans.

That’s my dream. A stadium of 20,000 fans worshiping God, while the team they happen to like play in the top division of Ecuadorian soccer. That would be amazing.
